Overland Expo Mountain West ran August 21 to 23 at The Ranch in Loveland, Colorado, and pulled around 18,500 people past more than 300 exhibitors. Organisers reckon it may have set a record for the number of new products, rigs and vehicle platforms debuting at a single event in the series.
On the camper side, Supertramp debuted the Paragon for the F-350 platform, VanCraft showed the Strata with a flexible layout, and Four Wheel Campers had the new Outpost 8.0, the larger sibling of the 6.5 that showed up earlier in the summer.
The DIY Showcase remains the most interesting corner of the event, and this year's field included a K3500 with the wheelbase shortened by two feet, a kingpin Dana 60 up front, 40-inch tyres, and an aluminium flatbed and pop-up camper fabricated in-house down to the cabinetry and the poured countertops. Four hundred watts of solar and 300 amp-hours of lithium behind it.
A day pass ran $32. The show moves for 2027: August 20 to 22 at Riverdale Regional Park in Brighton, Colorado, which is a different venue rather than a different weekend.
Toyota brought the Tundra Trailhunter to Loveland for its first public showing, which is a choice worth noticing. The Trailhunter line is aimed at overlanding rather than desert running, and showing it to a field full of people who already own roof tents is a more honest test than a convention centre stand.
Alongside it the company showed a rugged off-road concept built on the global Hilux platform and described as purpose-built for overlanding. The Hilux is not sold in the United States, which makes a concept on that platform at an American show an interesting thing to put in public.
The full-size overland trim is a crowded category now. Ram and Jeep both ran vehicles on the driving course at the same event, and the heavy-duty aftermarket showed up in force with suspension systems for current F-250 and F-350 trucks.
What none of it settles is whether a factory overland trim beats the same money spent on a plain truck and a builder you trust. That argument was being had in the campground all weekend.
